Afrexim Bank Backs $1 Billion Fund for Africa’s Creative Industries

Culture has never lacked influence in Africa. What it has lacked is the scale of investment needed to turn that influence into lasting economic value. This week, one of the continent’s biggest creative finance initiatives signaled that Africa is beginning to invest in its cultural industries as serious economic assets rather than emerging sectors.

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA) have appointed One Street Studios as Co-General Partner for a new initiative to mobilize up to US$1 billion for Africa’s film and creative industries.

The fund aims to strengthen financing across the creative value chain, supporting film production, content distribution, infrastructure, and intellectual property development. By expanding access to capital, the initiative seeks to help African creators build globally competitive businesses while retaining more value from the continent’s creative output.

The investment also reflects growing recognition that the creative economy is a strategic driver of economic growth, job creation, and exports. As global demand for African content continues to rise, stakeholders are increasingly focused on building the financial systems needed to transform cultural influence into sustainable economic power.

The developments point to a maturing creative economy where access to capital, intellectual property protection, and business infrastructure are becoming just as important as talent. Together, these investments are helping position Africa’s creative industries as a major pillar of long-term economic growth.
