AFC and Dangote Back Major Fertilizer Expansion

Food security is no longer just about increasing harvests, it  is increasingly about securing the industries that make large-scale agricultural production possible. As Africa looks to reduce import dependence and strengthen regional food systems, investment in agricultural inputs is becoming a strategic priority. This week, one of the continent’s largest fertilizer financing deals reinforced that shift.

The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and the Dangote Group have secured a $600 million financing facility to support a $7 billion fertilizer expansion program, marking one of Africa’s largest investments in agricultural inputs.

The initiative is expected to expand fertilizer production capacity, improve access for farmers, and strengthen regional food security by reducing reliance on imports. Increased local production could also help stabilize fertilizer supply and support higher agricultural productivity across the continent.

The partnership reflects growing recognition that strengthening agricultural value chains requires sustained investment in critical infrastructure and industrial capacity. As demand for food continues to rise, fertilizer production is increasingly being viewed as a cornerstone of Africa’s long-term agricultural transformation.
